Laudate Devotional 🙏

"5 Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. 6 Because of these, the wrath of God is coming. 7 You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. 8 But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. 9 Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices."

Recently I was grabbing dinner with a friend. After the initial “how have you been”, our conversation naturally flowed into our faith lives. He expressed a building frustration in his coworkers who lately have been very critical of our shared Catholic faith and in some cases straight up mocking.

At first I was taken aback. Unsure of what advice to give, I simply nodded my head in understanding. I put myself in his shoes and I too started to feel frustrated. However, I realized that I rarely, if ever, am surrounded by people who would openly challenge our shared Christian faith. So why such a difference in our worldly experience?

Why does one person experience criticism while the other doesn’t?

This week’s passage really put things into perspective. Paul writes:

“15 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.”

There is an emphasis on community rather than the individual faith journey.

You may recall the verse from Matthew 18:20, “For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there..."

So while my friend may have still experienced criticism either way, when you place yourself among peers of similar faith and love of Jesus, peace will prevail in your heart. Take a moment today to be thankful for your community.

By iron, through iron, to iron. Laudate!

God Bless,

Samuel Newcamp
